From today's W-H business section:

'TD Ameritrade's stock price rose 95 cents a share and closed at $20.90 Wednesday after Tuesday's public disclosure that two hedge funds are pressing the Omaha online brokerage to merge with either E*Trade Financial or Charles Schwab.

The closing price was a 52-week high. The price was less than $15 in April, crossed $17 by the end of that month, passed $19 May 23 and hit $20.53 May 31 before slipping back to less than $20 by Tuesday.

The two funds said a merger with E*Trade would result in cost savings of $450 million to $500 million and give TD Ameritrade access to E*Trade's international presence.

Merging with Schwab would give TD Ameritrade an immediate solution to its effort to boost the size of its clients' accounts. Synergies in such a merger would be worth $800 million to $1 billion, the letter said.'..

Last summer, TD Ameritrade issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to developers to build a major office campus in Omaha. There was a possibility, the campus would exceed 200,000 sq. ft. Since then, I have heard little about this. Let's hope that they make a tangible commitment to Omaha (in the form of expensive real estate) before any possible merger would take place.

Wow! First I heard of the rfp. It will be interesting to see what happens. Just when I think a lull in development is coming more seems to keep coming.

TD Ameritrade, E-Trade shares rise on merger report
Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) - Shares of TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. and E-Trade Financial Corp. each rose Wednesday after a published report said the online brokers have been discussing a possible combination.

The talks have been going on for weeks and are focused on making sure both companies agree on strategy, but the companies aren't yet close to a deal, The Wall Street Journal reported in Wednesday's edition.

Quote:

A spokeswoman for E-Trade told the newspaper the firm's management team believes there is "tremendous value in consolidation that aligns business strategy and operational synergies and will do what is in the best interest of its customers." An Ameritrade spokeswoman told the paper, "We have talked and continue to talk to peers in the industry."

Ameritrade will keep Omaha as home base

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1208&u_sid=10457334

CHRISTINE LAUE COPYRIGHT ©2008 OMAHA WORLD-HERALD wrote:
Omaha-based TD Ameritrade plans to consolidate its four metro-area offices and more than 2,000 local employees into a new Old Mill headquarters — and eventually hire up to 400 more employees to work there.

The move affirms the company's commitment to Omaha, following speculation that it could leave as companies such as Enron have — and especially after the May announcement that the successor to the chief executive officer would continue living in New Jersey.

"We did look at leaving, and we always have to look at all of our alternatives," said Chief Financial Officer Bill Gerber. Ultimately, he said, the company decided to stay because "we had a great work force, we had great employees."

He said the brokerage firm would lease several existing buildings and two new multistory buildings to be built by a developer by spring 2011. The site is at 108th and Farnam Streets, south of West Dodge Road and just west of Interstate 680.

Employees won't move until 2011, Gerber said. He added that if growth demands that the company keep its existing facilities, it could continue leasing them as well.

does this have anything to do with the current construction in old mill. it looks as if they are building a building that would connect two existing two story buildings?

I noticed a lot of construction is taking place across the street from the two TD Ameritrade buildings in Old Mill off 108th and Farnam Dr. Has anyone heard any updates on the new buildings?
